Why are there poor people in Nigeria is a question
that popped on Quora recently. It is a common
question, since the poverty level in Nigeria is
especially alarming.
A United Nations, UN, report on Nigeria’s Common
Country Analysis (CCA), has described the country as
one of the poorest and unequal country in the world,
with over 80m of her population living below poverty
line.
Below are some reasons why Nigeria will always have
poor people:
1. Sani Abacha
General Sani Abacha was Nigerian president for 5
years (1993 - 1998) and in that time, he stole
unspeakable amount of public funds. Wikipedia states
that in 2002, Abacha's family purportedly agreed to
return $1.2 billion that was taken from the central
bank.

2. There are poor people everywhere
Another interesting reason is that there are poor
people everywhere. Even the most developed countries
in the world have a population of people on the
poverty level. So it is to be expected that Nigeria will
always have poor people.

3. Greed
Uche Onegeria says: "Also the level of greed in the
Nigerian political system is cancerous. It spreads like
cancer and has no cure.
"If the funds were utilized properly, poverty will not be
linked to Nigeria today. So to answer your question,
maybe Ethiopia and Niger’s hunger is environmental but
Nigeria’s poverty is man-made."

Meanwhile, on Thursday, May 25, 2017, several
Nigerians were in courts across the country on
corruption charges, for amounts going into billions of
naira.
NAIJ.com gathered that as at May 25, there are at least
8 corruption cases in court according to a list and
infographic published by TransparencITng.
