FG refinances debt and adds more loans ON August 28, 2017 8:37 AM /

Image
By Dele Sobowale THE recent announcement by the Federal Minister of Finance of the government’s decision to refinance the country’s debt by borrowing dollars at seven per cent instead of locally at between 13 and 18.5 per cent would have been commendable if it was not just a mere paper exercise which would still not reduce the quantum of debt the country is owing. On paper it would reduce the cost of borrowing, but at maturity it would require the country to source for dollars to repay. Naira Unsaid by the Minister is the fact that the Federal government’s requirement for loans has almost totally squeezed out private sector borrowing and has driven up domestic interest rates beyond levels that are healthy for investment. At rates ranging from 25 to 40 per cent few companies can afford to borrow and survive. So, the shift to external borrowing was borne out of necessity which is always the mother of innovations. Interest rates abroad have always bee far lower than what obtains i

Nigeria has enough laws to curb hate speeches ON August 28, 2017 9:00 AM /

Image
By Femi Falana Top officials of the federal government and the various state governments have continued to express concern over the growing wave of hate speeches in the country. To curb the menace, a new law is being proposed which will categorize hate speech as ‘terrorism’. At the last meeting of the National Economic Council it was agreed by the federal and state governments that a special court be established for the arrest and prosecution of purveyors of hate speeches, kidnapping and terrorist acts. Before further energies and resources are dissipated by the government on the enactment of a new hate speech law it is pertinent to point out that the country has enough laws to deal with the menace. What is however lacking is the political will to arrest and prosecute those who contravene the provisions of the relevant laws. For instance, the Kaduna State government has had cause to drag a journalist to court for allegedly exaggerating the number of people that were killed in Souther

Nigeria: “The settled, non negotiable union” ON August 26, 2017 3:34 AM / IN Frank &

By Dr. Ugoji Egbujo It’s not impossible Lord Lugard is laughing in his grave. It’s not often that a man’s selfish and commercial adventure come to be venerated as a moral ideal. When he strapped the southern and northern protectorates together in 1914, he did it to meet British colonial interests. Now he must be a god. That fruit of adventurous imperialism, that contraption for commercial exploitation, that accidental union, has become a non negotiable union. Well, they could say he wasn’t ingenuous. After all, most African countries were carved out by the restless greed of colonial masters. But we are very religious. So they could say, it was God who fashioned it. Then they would say there is strength in size and diversity. And the prudent would add, that re-negotiations and breakdowns could be explosive and costly. They will always point to Rwanda, their bogey man. Then we will be told that the consensus is that we must live together. Rwanda didn’t teach them more. The authority for
